My 4 month old woke up with a diaper rash on Friday, loose stools, not eating as much, and not napping like she was before. She also drools like a St. Bernard. Could she be teething? I don't feel anything out of the norm but she has never had smooth gums so I can't tell if anything coming through.
Teething????
Whether doctors think so or not my kids had all of those symptoms when cutting teeth. Just keep Vaseline on her rash it does not burn and keeps it from getting wet or poop on it. I kept a bib on my kids and changed it a couple times a day with the drool. Just make sure it is a soft one some of the terry cloth can be rough and rub their chins. A lot of times the gums will get very red when they are coming through.
All in all it sounds like teeth to me.
The diarrhea should calm down but the drooling will not until all the teeth are in, but every time more start to erupt mine got diarrhea again. My kids were late in getting teeth close to one, but once they did they cut 4 and 5 at a time, makes for a cranky baby.
I used Motrin if needed, it last longer and also helps with swelling. There is a product called "Teething Tablets" they are all natural and are sold at Wal-Mart type stores by the vitamins. They worked wonders for my kids. They are little tablets that dissolve as soon as slobber hits them. I am not sure if you can give a 4 month old Motrin though read the label or ask your doctor.
Reply:I'd say she probably is teething. Give her a teething ring or a wet washrag to suck on. If she is really crabby give her some tylenol for the pain. My daughter starting teething at 3mo so don't think it's too early. Good Luck.
Reply:Experts disagree about whether teething actually causes symptoms — like fussiness, diarrhea, and fever — or whether these common symptoms are not related to teething at all and just coincidentally appear at the same time as emerging teeth. Regardless, many parents maintain that their teething babies do experience discomfort (though some babies get through the process with no problems at all). The symptoms most likely to trouble a teether include:
• Drooling (which can lead to a facial rash)
• Gum swelling and sensitivity
• Irritability or fussiness
• Biting behavior
• Refusing food
• Sleep problems
Though many parents report that their babies have loose stools, runny noses, or a fever just before a new tooth arrives, most experts don't think teething is to blame for these symptoms. But I think it is.
Reply:my son started drooling, putting everything in his mouth etc at 10 weeks. i was convinced he was going to get a tooth any day....he is 6 months and his first tooth popped through yesterday! the only changes i saw right before the tooth came through were that he stopped sleeping through the night and his drooling actually slowed down a bit. now that it came through things are back to normal....drool and all!
