Dog teething?

My 3 month old puppy is currently teething. I have bought her lots of soft and hard toys (including teething rings) to chomp on but every now and then she will try to nibble on my hands. If I do not pull my hand away quick enough she seems to bite quite viciously - she has drawn blood. When I say 'NO' firmly she just growls back. What should I do to stop her doing this?

Sounds like you have a typical puppy - here is a great article on how to deal with mouthing and biting in puppies -

I used the bitter apple spray on my hands - that worked well. Keep the faith - it stops around a year and doesn't hurt as bad after 6 months.
Reply:If she has a kennel put her in there for time out. And say bad girll. My yorkie did this at first but she doesnt do it anymore.
Reply:yelp loudly and turn your back on her when she gets mean. she will realize that play time is over as soon as you turn around and she will get frustrated. it will take a while to get her used to this, but has always worked for me. does she like ice? my puppy loves ice and it keeps him busy for a little while. the biting thing is definitely a puppy thing, but she should never growl. show her that you are the boss. you can do this by standing up and saying "no" sternly so she sees you are the dominant one. keep at it. don't give up, you can do it!

good luck!
Reply:I'm afraid all puppies do this. It is very wearying but they do stop doing this eventually once all their teeth have come through. I kept two from my last litter and my arms and hands were black and blue from their continual biting. They get frantic from time to time when they are cutting their teeth. Every time she starts to nip you try and offer her a really hard toy or get her a big smokey bone to gnaw on. This will help her while she is teething.

You could try folding your arms accross your chest and don't give her any eye contact when you enter the room and if she leaps at you just turn your back on her each time. They do get the message eventually.

I wish you well. Having been through all this myself I can sympathise with you but take heart. My two are now 6 months old and have started to calm down and they don't bite any more.

Good luck.
Reply:Lots of dogs do this.

When your dog bites, and hurts you. Yelp really loud like a dog would if hurt, and pull your hand away.

Your puppy just needs to learn what the boundaries are. Don't punish her. It's just her learning.

I have two Labradors and the breed is notorious for mouthing. I went through exactly this, buy now I can play fight, rough play with them, and stick my hand in their mouths at anytime, and they do not bite down.

If it's teething, you could try empty plastic bottles (no collars or tops on) Put treats inside, so she has to bite through to get it. Kept mine occupied for hours on end, and saved the chair legs.
Reply:All the tips posted are good ones. I just want to leave you with a word of support....This behavior is very annoying, but he will grow out of it once his adult teeth come in at five or six months. I couldn't wear shorts all summer because my puppy was "herding" me while he teethed, making the back of my legs black and blue. It will pass though and you will have a sweet, loving dog. Puppies are often tough and challenging because they have to be...survival of the fittest and all that jazz. Hang in there!
Reply:small water pistol stops them without any pain
Reply:I agree with what most people have said, yelping, turning away etc, but something else you could try is to put her teething rings in the fridge for a while before you give it to her. The cold will help to ease the pain in her gums caused by teething. It works for babies, and it worked for my weimi when he was teething.

Good luck!
Reply:When a pup is teething it usually feels (to the pup)like the gums are always itching, Try putting the teething ring in the fridge so it numbs her Gums.

in our supermarket(Tesco) you can buy Dog freeze tubes they are like kids ice pops but they are Gravy flavored for dogs, or you could make a very week gravy mix and freeze for her your self(only put a small amount of mix as to beware not to give her to much salt)

Also i think she gets Grumpy because she needs any thing/everything to chew on to try to relive her hurting gums so when you withdraw your hand to her its like removing the pain reliever (maybe so far you haven't found the thing that eases her,but she may feel comfort as she is with you having cuddle and she will relive the pain of her gums gnawing on your hand)

She does need to know she cant chew your hand for her comfort though but to her shes trying to keep a best toy and your taking it away,so you need to offer another alternative(and Quick) as chewing you may become a habit.

Hope this helps(I have 3Dogs and have delt with 2 litters of pups so i answer though my experiences)
Reply:Put a carrot in the freezer, then when you give it her the coldness will soothe her gums, the hardness will help her teeth and she'll get lots of vitamins from the carrot. And she'll love it I promise you.
Reply:Ahh bless! Please don't put her in a crate or tell her off, her little teeth are driving her nuts poor little soul. Have you ever seen a human baby teething? Their little cheeks go all red and angry looking and the pain is really bad and its exactly the same for your puppy! Give her some raw carrots that have been in the fridge for a few hours ( the colder the better ) and that will cool her hot mouth down and help with the teething. You can also get some baby bonjela ( made for humans but ok to use ) and check with your vet if you can give her half a painkiller, it will help! Poor little cow, it must be driving her round the twist, you too so go get those carrots! She won't continue to bite you so hard, its just that she's in bad pain and is looking to you as her mum to help.
