When teething, could it make the baby want to eat less?

my lil guy has not been eating well, and im all pretty sure he is teething, could the teething cause him to eat less than normal?

You always have to be careful not to pin every symptom on teething. Many times babies will have an ear infection. If your son gets relief from Tylenol and is generally happy after that then, sure chalk it up to teething. Increased drooling will also go hand in hand with that. Lots of people will recommend Oragel but that has a numbing agent in it ... it numbs everything it touches including the throat so please use caution with that. If he normally sleeps though the night and is now waking several times screaming...it's not his teeth - teething is a natural body function and the pain should never be so severe it wakes him. Decreased appetites are also indicators of changes including teeth and infections. Fevers are normal as long as they don't go up over 102. If you (and you're a mom so you have that "sense") think it could be anything other than teething...call your pediatrician and take him in for a quick check. I sure hope he feels better and those darn teeth pop through quick!
Reply:It definitely causes lost in appetite, his gums are very sensitive and hurting because the teeth are coming, try giving him soft foods or lost of liquids if he's not eating well. Make sure you keep him hydrated.
Reply:yes, it is possible. my daughter (20 months)

did not want 2 eat much when she was teething. So i gave her some pedisure as much as possible so she would get the vitamins that she needed. But if it continues for a long perid of time i would contact the ped. doc. just 2 make sure theres not something else wrong. Babyoralgel and tylenol will become ur best friend, also there is all natural teething tablets that r safe, they dissolve in the babys mouth, u can find it at wal-mart, toys r us, good luck
Reply:Yes teething could cause your little guy to eat less. You might want to try using Baby Orajel on his gums. You could try using Tylenol or Motrin as well, but since teething can also cause some children to run low grade fevers you might want to hold off and only use it if he runs a true fever or only at night to help him sleep, that way you wont be covering up symptoms of a cold, flu or larger problem. If the Baby Orajel alone will not work you probably need to at least talk with the babies doctor or his nurse.
Reply:Yes, their little gums are hurting and the pressure on them when suckling causes them to pull off and not want to suck. Know that most likley this will only last a couple days (but there may be several times during his infancy that he will act the same way as new teeth come in.) Also know that even though he may be having teething issues now, it may still be awhile before actual teeth show up. My little one is now 5 months old and we've already gone through two teething bouts where she refused to eat and cried all night. We still don't have teeth that have popped out, but I think any day we may get some by the feel of her gums. Good luck.
