Hi my Puppy is teething she has lost about 4 teeth already. She has gone off her food and has been sick this morning. She is still drinking lots off water and running round like a crazy thing. live in Turkey and it is very hot. I just wondered if it is normal for dogs to go off there food when they are teething- Also I have had to change her food as the vet didn't have her normal one- could all this be causing this or could it be serious
Puppy teething?
Change in food probably making her sick. As long as she's drinking don't panic yet. It's not abnormal for dogs to go off their food when teething...it hurts. Might try a softer dog food. If this doesn't work and she continues to vomit by all means call your Vet. The heat can also affect their appetite too. Make sure she drinks lots of water and doesn't get dehydrated from heat or vomiting.
Good luck, it's hot here in Canada too!
Reply:Yes possibly but if u r really worried then u should contact ur vet.
Reply:normal. just make sure her food is available and give her a rawhide bone to chew on. i have heard some ppl give their dogs apples to chew on too.
Reply:could simply be the dog food change. Get your dog back on its own brand. If your pup starts to become ill looking and letargic then phone a vet. If your pup is still happy then dont worry about it
Reply:yes and no
Reply:I dont think it has to do with the heat or teething. I know for a fact when dietary changes are made, some animals will refuse to eat. Abruptly changing your dogs diet wasnt a wise thing to do. See if you can get any of the other brand soon. Start mixing it with the new food for a gradual change...if you are wanting to make the change at all.
Reply:just remember, a dog, no matter what breed, is capable of scraping roadkill off the highway, rolling in it, and digesting it ! It sounds like your dog has a good home. I'm sure she's going to be well-loved. Just make sure she has something other than your furniture to chew on ! I learned the hard way ! (put some raw meat, like hamburger in front of her and watch what happens ! )
Reply:Teething dont tend to make dogs be sick or lose the appetite. Your dog may have taken a disliking to the new food. As you have a puppy it is not a good idea to change their food often if you are you need to mix it with you old food first to make sure the puppy doesnt develop diahorea. I would recomend stocking up on the old food and take your puppy back to the vets, because it sounds as though she could be dehydrated, drinking loads of water is her way of trying to rehydrate herself, also the sickness could be the heat and dehydration.
And give her rubber toys like kongs(understructuble) to chew on
I would get a vets opinion asap because there could be a underlying serious health issue.
Reply:I imagine her mouth is tender while her new teeth come in...As they are for babies. There might even be a little bleeding. I believe she got sick from eating the different dog food at the vets. Their stomachs are sensitive when it comes to their food.. They eat the same thing everyday and then you all of a sudden give them something new it gives them a belly ache (If you change a dogs food it has to be done gradually mixing in small amounts with her regular food and over time increasing the amount of new food and lessening the old.(reg.)). But your dog will be fine... She is back home where she will get her regular food and her stomach will be normal again in a day or two...
I have a dog and this is my experience with mine.
Reply:Sometimes dogs go off their food for no reason that you can see. If they are feeling sick very often the best response is to stop eating. And it's quite effective.
And as you have mentioned right now she is dealing with teething, heat and a change in food. I would say chances are pretty good she will get better on her own.
As she is teething, she can be in a lot of pain at times. You may find that she is especially fond of regrigerated chew toys or even frozen. They help with the pain.
If it is something that she is not real excited about or is perhaps concerned that she is not allowed to chew, you can put something yummy on it to convince her like peanut butter or gravy.
Reply:your puppy may well have sore gums, so maybe soften their normal food a little for them. also provide them with some nice cold chewy things (I used hand or face cloths soaked in water and frozen) for them to chew on. her new food could be causing the sickness, you should alsways change over gradually if you are going to swap foods. keep your dog in the cool and maybe give them boiled rice and chicken for a few days if they are not eating well. Good luck.
Reply:I'd give her ice cubes, if I were you. They are brilliant for soothing those sore teeth especially in such hot weather. My puppy is teething this week %26amp; cannot get enough of them!
