Soothing a teething puppy?

Hi,

My 3 month old beagle puppy is teething and in the last couple of days I've noticed that his gums seem to be a bit more tender then usual. I've established this due to his occasional whines and whimpers while he's playing with his toys. He is also biting me a lot more than he used to and appears only to do this when his toys aren't in reach.

He has lots and lots of chew toys - rope toys, latex toys, rubber toys, plush toys... heaps...

He also gets a bone to chew on once a week and his regular food is dry food.

What can I do for him to help ease the teething pain?... If there is anything I can do.

Soothing a teething puppy?
You could try putting his chew toys in a plastic bag and then put them in the freezer for a couple of minutes until they are nice and cool, then give them to him (remove the bag first!) the coolness will help soothe his gums. But also take him to a vet if the problem persists or gets worse.
Reply:It sounds like you have got it sorted with all the chewy toys and the like!

As for the teething pain you could try giving him a drink of chamomile tea. Just add a tea bag to his water bowl. Or if you are game dip you finger in the tea and rub it on your puppy's gums.
Reply:unfortunately, there is not really anything else you can do. just keep making sure he has plenty to chew on, its there own way of making themselves feel better.

my husky pup did the same as did my previouse pups.

your doing the right thing, just keep your shoes out the way and it will be fine
Reply:You can get an all cotton twine rope toy, soak it and freeze it. He will enjoy the icy chew.

This site tells about Anbesol:

Reply:I try to hand feed mine ice cubes...She likes that:) But the toys are a good thing for him, he has to get through it.
Reply:Check with your vet but I am sure that something like what it used for baby's gums like ambusol in just a very tiny amount would be okay. Do nothing though like that without talking to your vet.
Reply:Take away the bones.

The things that you don't want him to chew need to be put away so that he chews on the proper things. If you don't do it now, he will chew on things with your smell on them and this will be a constant problem for his entire life.

Call your vet. It is possible that you can use the same thing on him they use for humans but it is better to check and make sure.

There is also a canine tylenol you can get but I do not remember the name. Again ask the vet.

Emphasize his plush and rope toys for the time being.
Reply:I knotted up a small towel soaked it in water and froze it. My puppy loves to chew on it.
Reply:Put the shoes in the closet. Dr. Foster and Smith (online) sell a (I believe it's canvas), but is specifically made for teething puppies. it goes in the freezer and they can chew it without tearing it apart. We also used a regular coke bottle (plastic of course) filled it part way with water and froze it. Even with German Shepherd razor sharp puppy teeth, it took him 4 weeks to finally puncture it and all he did was drink the icey cold water. He loves it and it's super cheap.
