Teething advice?

I'm interested in hearing about the teething experience from other moms %26amp; dads:

what worked?

what didn't?

what should I expect?

how long does the discomfort last?

when will we see a tooth?

I have a baby girl who's almost 4 months- she's been drooling a lot for the past few weeks, is always sucking on her hand or toy, and just recently has started crying inconsolably for short periods. A few other moms have confirmed she is teething (also by feeling her gums), but I've received mixed advice on what to do (one swears by tablets, another curses them). Thanks in advance!

Teething advice?
Every baby gets teeth at a different time although the typical time for the first tooth to cut through is around six months. A baby may drool more than usual when cutting a tooth but when we asked our pediatrician about our son's drooling at 4 months she explained to us that all babies start to drool more at that time. She also said that babies use their mouth to explore so it was normal for them to chew on toys, thier fingers - whatever they could get their hands on.

It can be hard to know if a baby is teething or if they are just having a rough day so I know a lot of moms that don't give any medicines. We have tried baby oragel and teething tablets with some success. Cold teething rings were usually the best bet.

Our son didn't get his first teeth until 8.5 months old. He was a bit cranky for a few days before the tooth popped through, he had a runny nose and loose stools and a bit of a diaper rash.

Just remember - every baby is different! When i asked our doc how I would know if my son was teething she said "when the tooth pops through". That was pretty much true for us!

Good luck! :)
Reply:my husbands parents gave him a frozen waffle to knaw on. said it worked wonders and was safe for him.
Reply:I guess every mothers are different when it comes to trying out methods to comfort their babies during teething stages.... I never used teething gel/tablets because you never know if they are really teething or just plain cranky and also teeth erupts at different ages.... my daughter had her first at 6 mos and my grandson didnt get his til 8 mos....Most of the time I use frozen teething rings.....Most importantly, just soothe your baby whenever you can......

That is up to you whether you want to what's best for your baby, whatever works for her.

Good Luck!
Reply:Every mother has different opinions, but personally I never tried the tablets, but heard good things from them. For my son, I gave him a little tylenol and bought him a vibrating teething toy. It seemed to do the trick. You can also try using a cool, wet cloth to rub on her gums. I hope she feels better soon! :)
Reply:my baby is 5 months and went through the phase of drooling and sending every item into her mouth, trying to bite. no idea if teething is a cause. i've read that babies send things into their mouth as part of exploration at this phase. the senses from lips and tongue are more acute than fingers.

i intro a teething gel thingy to her since she likes to bite. Lets her have all the fun biting away so wont bite on other unsuitable stuff like her pillow and soft toys. Also get her familiar with it so chances of her rejecting it when teething discomfort sets in will be minimized.
