Teething behavior question?

Thanx for taking the time first of all..





My wonderful son 4 1/2 months old has been putting hands in mouth + drooling lots since about 3 months old and now behavior is getting sort of "agressive" he oes crazy sometimes when putting boths hands in mouth trying to grab my hand and put in mouth biting really hard while getting very frustrated and angry. It seems like it comes and goes..Last checkup+vaccination (his 3 rd) last week nurse said no signs of teething when I asked her. I've heard this can go on for a while before you see signs of teething but I just wanted to ask and see about other ppls experiances and if this agressive behaviour with the biting is normal when not seeing any teeth coming at all?

This will go on now for months, be patient. Give him a wet wash rag to chew on, for some reason babies like to chew on wash rags, they will bite, out of pure pain I think, of their gums. You may see the swelling from time to time, they may not want to eat then. They may run a slight fever when going through this.


Some babies can tolerate "Ambusol" for numbing the gums, some not. Some will tolerate a frozen teething ring, some will not. You have to try everything.


This is a bad time for both the infant and the parents. Sometimes the infant is satisfied with just chewing on something semi-soft, this also help the teeth to come through.
Reply:There's plenty of teething that can go on before or without any "evidence" of teeth about to show up. Your baby could be teething for several more months or get teeth in 2 weeks. He could also get several teeth at virtually the same time so his whole mouth could be hurting. Have you tried a cold wash cloth for him to chew on? Or some of those frozen/cold chew toys? Or a frozen bagel? Also you could give him tylenol and just see if it makes a difference and that may give you a better indication of whether he is teething.
Reply:Yes, all biting and aggressive behaviour is normal. You will probably see teeth coming soon if the behaviour is getting worse. My daughter went nuts for about 2 1/2 months before her teeth came, she was 6 months but they came out fully at 7 months. It will seem like they come up then go down but whats really happening is the gums are swelling. If you can find it , buy some Infants Friend its all natural and helps with teething, wind all of the basic "grumpies".
Reply:It sure sounds like teething to me: drooling, biting, chewing on hands. That starts even before you can actually see the pearly lumps of teeth in the gums, although drooling a lot can start at 3-4 months even without really being teething. Babies' first teeth usually come in at about 6 months, but can arrive either much earlier (like 3 months) or much later. Everyone is different. Try giving him one of those teething rings that you keep in the fridge: coolness is soothing. And be patient; the tooth/teeth will pop through soon enough.


Luckily both my boys didn't bite too much, since I breastfed both of them for a long time, even after their teeth came in, and the few times they did bite, I saw stars!
Reply:My son did the same. Even though there is no sign of a tooth yet, they can move under the gum. Chew toys are great. Be patient it could be a while.
Reply:yes that can happen. my son behaved like that for about three months before his teeth started to come up. you can give him something hard to chew on. if you use corn you can give him the cob when you're done with it or a piece of toast. you can even buy teething rings. some of them have liquid inside and go in the freezer but i don't know as to their safety. good luck
