Toddler teething for a long time...?

My son is 2 1/2. He was a late starter with teething, and did not have any teeth until 17 mos. He now has all of them that he should, except the bottom canines. I believe these are coming in, but he has had teething symptoms in this area for months.

At his doc. appt last month, I was told that this is normal. My insurance will not cover a dentist until age 3.

His gums are swollen and tender, he will not sleep without ibuprofen, and still wakes frequently. In the past few months, there has been no change. Has anyone heard of a child teething in the same spot for 3+ mos? Also, any suggestions to help?

Not much more you can do, unfortunately. We've been working on the same set of molars for 2 months now. It's awful!
Reply:try the baby orajel that might help or washclothes that are frozen that will help. And just bare with him and give him lots of TLC when you can. My daughter has chewing problems with her back teeth too. When you get a chance and he's napping take one as well even a small one.
Reply:With my sons last teeth the bottom canines they have taken about 4 months to come in and they are not fully in yet. I had to give him motrin before bed as well. That was the only thing that helped him sleep. The doctor told me that it was normal for the last canine teeth to take a while to grow in fully.

My son had really bad blisters on his teeth where they were growing in, but once the teeth broke through he did a lot better and I didn't need to give him motrin anymore.

Try the teething tablets and frozen banana's, and cold wash clothes.
Reply:My son was a late bloomer with regard to teething also. He's now 2-1/2 and has started drooling again over the last few weeks. If memory serves, the canines or "eye teeth" as we call them, took the longest to come in. I don't recall exactly how long it was, but it seemed like at least a month or two for them to come in, but it may have been longer. If you're really worried, you might inquire as to whether your insurance will cover a dentist as a "specialist" if your pediatrician gives you a referral. Let me guess.... an HMO?
