What is teething?

everyone keeps telling me that teething occurs around 6months, and you give your baby frozen stuff to munch on, and bonjela. what i want to know from your experience, does this sound like stage 1 teething : my daughter keeps munching on her hands, she tries to put her whole fist in her mouth and gets fustrated and then cries. She wants to chew on anything she can get near her mouth, She has very faint white buds in her gums ( i can see the teeth underneath the gums ) but not too close to the surface, like i can white in her bottom gums ( bottom two teeth). she produces alot of saliva..

Now please tell me... does this sound like she is in her stage 1 teething?! - first time mom, with a 4month old daughter

What is teething?
Yes, she is teething and those white spots on ther gums are her teeth under the surface. The first stage of teething, the jaw is moving and it is forcing the front bottom teeth up (those are the first to come in). Since she doesn't have any teeth, don't give her any food. An ice cube (whole) in a wash cloth is great to use. Take 1 whole piece of ice and place it in the center of a clean wash cloth and then take a pony tail holder and secure the ice inside and then give it to her to chew on. You will have to hold it! Or you can go to any store that sells baby stuff and get a gel ring that you put in the freezer and take out when her mouth hurts. But, I personally liked the ice and so did my 4 kids. The second stage is when the teeth break skin and start to come up to the fullest and that isn't so bad. It just hurts when it trying to break through. Did you ever have your wisdom teeth come completely in? Think back to that and you will know what she is going through 28x.

The fun part is when the teeth start to "break" the skin, she will drool buckets, bite people and have diarrhea. Ora-gel has a baby gel that you can put on her gums for the pain but it burns so I never used it.

And, always call and speak with the pediatrician nurse about it. They can tell you better what to do. Hope that helps. And this is just the beginning of the teething. It will always get worse before it gets better.
Reply:Yes , she is most definitely teething! It can happen at different times for different babies. I had one baby that cut her first tooth at five months and was teething at four and a half months.
Reply:teething is when the teeth of a baby start to break through the skin, the toys help to soothe and numb the excruciating pain this causes

and yes, she is most definitely teething
Reply:This very definitely sounds like she's teething. Remember that when people tell you that babies start doing something at a certain age, they mean on an average. All babies progress at their own rate and will do everything in their own time. I've had a child that didn't start teething till she was almost 8 months old, and another that started teething at 3 months. If you're really concerned, take her to her doctor's and see what he says and what he recommends. Just remember that each baby is different and what's true for one baby may not be true for another.
Reply:ya, she is definately teething. Poor baby. Teething rings, and cold items are best. Doctors actually recommend NOT using anything frozen anymore because it can cause damage and be too hard for baby. Also, it is recommended NOT to use orajel. Rubbing her gums and anything safe she can chew or rub her gums on would be good.
Reply:yes. 4 months is a very normal age to get teeth at. Not unusual at all.

Good luck and hopefully she won't be in too much pain which will make life easier for you.
Reply:Yep! that sounds like teething to me..

cold wash cloth to chew on, they make teethers you can put in the freezer for her.. the baby oral gel is good too. and the wanting to chew stuff is normal too lol so is the massive drooling, lol

Certainly sounds like she is in her stage one teething :P

Good luck and gratz!

p.s. 6months is a general age for teething to start, doesnt mean it's for EVERY baby.. I havea neice who is 3 1/2 months and she is already teething too.. I have a great aunt who was born with 2 teeth already! Every baby is different!
