My 6 month old son has been teething for a coupkle months now but still hasn't broken any through. He screams bloody murder for most the day. I give him tylenol and motrin and orgel and teething tablets. Nothing seems to soothe him. He doesnt sleep rarely at all. Neither of my other 2 children were near this bad when they were cutting their first teeth. Could this be colic or something other than teething?
Teething or something worse?
This has to be the worst part of being a mother, not knowing for sure what is wrong. If he shows no other signs then I would guess teething, but I though my daughter was teething once, no fever no other symptons and I finally took her to the doctor and she had a bad ear infection. So I really think that if your gut is saying something else then go to the doctor. A mother's intsincts are best!
Reply:You need to get your baby to the doctor. It isn't normal for a baby to cry that much, or for that long. And you probably shouldn't give painkillers really often so get him checked out incase it is something more serious causing him pain.
Could also be that he is constantly over-tired, so cries alot - teeth normally break through within a couple of weeks, not months therefore it probably isn't teething?
Reply:I've heard negative things about orajel and infants/babies and wouldn't suggest using it on children either.
It seems no amount of pain killers are killing his pain, so why not stop them all together and offer him a frozen cloth to gnaw on. I would maybe see a new doctor or ask your doctor to check him over again, maybe it isn't teething related, and since he is always on some sort of painkiller it is going to be hard to tell exactly how he is reacting to normal day to day things.
Reply:It could be teething some kids are more sensitive than others.
You can try Hylands's Teething Tabs (all natural, homeopathic), they seemed to work wonderful for our son, they really helped him when Tylenol wouldn't.
My sister in law swore by frozen yogurt for my niece. I don't know how old your little one is but my niece was about 8 months before she cut her first tooth and she LOVE sharing the ice cream with her MOM. Just some and ideas.
If he continues with the screaming you may want to ask your Ped to take a look at him. But if the little guy has a boat load of teeth coming in he is probably in some pretty bad pain, until they come through.
I hope you find something that works.
