Teething sequence and biting problem?

My 4 month old son is showing signs of teething - drooling, nappy rash, red cheeks, chewing everything in sight etc. Last time I visited clinic (almost 3 weeks ago) my health visitor said she could see both bottom front teeth in the gum (central incisors) - however the tooth that appears to be trying to come first is half way back along the bottom (lateral incisors).

Q1. I'd always thought it was normal for the front teeth to erupt first?

Q2. Any ideas what I can give him to bite on instead of my fingers - note I'd really rather he didn't as I have U.L.D. (upper limb disorder) also known as R.S.I. (repeative strain injury).

I have bought teething toys for him but he can't seem to get them in the right place to chew on to help - instead he's taken to biting my fingers, which although very painful I don't stop him, or my nipple which I do stop but can't seem to prevent happening in the first place.

They can come in in any order but here is a link that has the "usual"...

Reply:Usually it is the front bottom teeth that come through first. Try letting him bite on a cold wet face washer. Just wet it and put it in the fridge to chill. They seem to really like it and the cold is soothing for them. Every time i wash my daughters face with the washer she grabs it off me and puts it straight in her mouth. She will chew it for ages.
Reply:usually its the bottom two then often the top four but my daughter at 4 months had all her teeth come in the space of 2 wks. you can give teething pegs
Reply:if u cant find something that he can grip back there properly then u should try rubbing some bonjela on his gums.........u can use it on babies from 4 months onwards
Reply:When my children were first teething, I had to hold the teeter in their mouth for them, it was better than my hand!! I also found this cool teether for my son ( age5) that vibrated in his mouth, I think it was by First years if they still make it.
Reply:It's usually the bottom front, then top front, then the ones on either side of those. But they can come in any order.

White patches could also be thrush and not a tooth. Is the white patch a hard tooth? ETA: Sounds like a tooth!!

I agree with the cold stuff. We often put a wet washcloth in the freezer, he loved chewing on that.
