Teething Question?

Is diahrea normal when a baby is teething? My son is 8 months old and has just cut his bottom two teeth. He has had diaharea for the past few days. He isn't running a fever and isn't acting like he doesn't feel good. He is just his normal happy baby self. He doesn't seem to be dehyrdrated, he has plenty of wet diapers and is eating just fine. The only problem he seems to have is the diaharea, so I was curious as to if this may be caused by his teething. Any advice?

It very well could be the cause of it. Babies react to teething differently. Just make sure your son is getting enough fluids to replace those lost- make sure his urine is clear and not yellow.

Reply:Yes, it could be only because all babies are different. Maybe it is affecting him that way. Good news is he's happy, eating right and it sounds like his diapers are 'filling up' just fine. I would watch it, however because it can't be good to go too long like that. If he doesn't quit by a couple more days - I would give your doctor a call. Good luck and have fun!
Reply:yeah its normal just keep an eye on him!! teething causes strong urine and diahrea.
Reply:That is one of the symptoms of teething. Your baby is making more saliva and that is more liquid, it goes hand and hand. As long as nothing else starts to go wrong or your baby acts "off" then he is fine!
Reply:Yes, it could be the reason behind it. If you think about it, when babies cut teeth, they drool....a lot! Some of it drools down there chin, some of it is swallowed, causing loose stools. If he doesn't have a fever and doesn't seem to be dehydrated, then you have nothing to worry about. Hope this helps!
Reply:My son can get runny stools when he is teething but only one in a day for a few days so yes it might be a sign of teething but don't assume it is.





So many things are put down to 'teething' when it may well be something else going on.





Go with your own judgement and if you feel everything else is ok then yes, it may be the teething.
Reply:It can be. The amount of saliva they swallowed during teething can cause loose bowels. A few stools a day is not diarrhea though.


See how long it continues or if it gets worse and call your doctor.
Reply:Between the constant saliva he is swallowing and the things he is putting in his mouth, he is bound to have some strange bowel movements.





Make sure that his hands are clean. If you put your fingers in his mouth (like I do with my baby) keep your hands clean. And disinfect his toys, too.





General rule, If the diarhea last for more than 5 days, call your ped to see if there is anything to be concerned about.
Reply:Yes, it could cause the poopy problems. My son was never cranky when he teethed, but you could always tell it in his diapers! Man they were nasty even when he was breastfeeding! He usually cut two teeth at a time too so it went alot quicker for him. We just made sure to give him a little water, and I drank more water, he did get some tylenol/advil when he ran a high temp and just watched him. He did fine with it and as long as you keep him hydrated your son will too.
