Teething at 13 weeks?!?

My 13 week old baby son is very upset tonight - he's very distressed, constantly dribbling, rubbing at his mouth and putting his hands in his mouth, and crying inconsolably! His cheeks are red and rosy and so are his lips.

He was like this a few days ago and I told my Health Visitor but she said that he couldn't be teething yet and it was just his mouth getting ready for when he starts solids.

But I feel he is teething - his gums look swollen and I have read this is a sign of teething.

I've given him a dose of Calpol as I can't bear to see him so upset, and he's gone to sleep now. Should I call the doctor? I'm a first time mum so not sure what to do. I didn't think babies started teething this early?

I have some teething gel which my other half bought a few days ago - should I try that? I just don't know what to do and its horrible to see my baby in such distress, its breaking my heart!

Teething at 13 weeks?!?
this sounds just like teething..i suggest you ignore your health visitor as this time mum knows best! my son had his 1st 2 teeth come through when he just turned 4 months. was chewing his hands and dribbling at 3 months too.your son might not get any teeth for another year,bt show signs until then. babies teeth come thru at different times.i know someone who was born with 4 teeth!!!!!! my son had a full set at 15 months but my friends baby has only got 4 at 17months.

there is not alot you can do for teething, the only thing that will cure it is when the tooth breaks thru. you can only really try to comfort your son by giving him calpol, teething powders, cold things to chew on etc..which is more or less what you have been doing.

speak to your dr if you want but i dont think there is anything else they can offer you unfortunately...

goodluck to you i know how horrible it is when your baby is in pain, you sound like a good mummy and i'm sure your son will feel better knowing he has you looking after him and giving him cuddles when he feels unhappy x
Reply:my friends daughter has started with this recently and she the same age, teething gels usually say from 4 months up, check with the health visitor first, try putting his dummy in cold sterile water so it is cooler on his gums!!!
Reply:I would recommend taking him to the doctor to rule out anything else.

If he is teething give him something cold to chew on, such as a teething ring from the fridge. Some people suggest wetting a baby washcloth with cold water and allowing the baby to chew on this.

Teething gel can be helpful, but it lasts 20 minutes and can only be given every 6 hours. Because it can impair the gag reflex and impair swallowing, you need to wait 1 hour after applying to feed your son.

Tylenol is helpful. You can buy infants tylenol over the counter. Look for a bottle with weight-based dosing, not age-based because weight-based is more accurate.
Reply:My second son started early. I don't think teething gel will hurt and of course baby tylenol. I'd try a cold teething ring and call the doctor.
Reply:i suggest that you should call your doctor i have not personally ever heard of a baby teething this early i am not saying that it don't happen though all children are different but he could be having some kind of allergic reaction to something give him infants Tylenol check and see if he has a fever i know where i live our pediatric have an after hours line so maybe you could call and speak with a nurse and if you cant call the hospital and ask to speak to the maternity ward then ask to speak to a nurse they should be able to help good luck !!
Reply:He may well be teething, some babies can be born with teeth.
Reply:He could definitely be teething. My daughter got her first 2 teeth at the same time when she was four months old. I used a frozen washcloth for her. Another thing that I did was freeze a couple of baby spoons for her to gum. Other than that, I gave her infant Tylenol for the pain.
Reply:If it helps and maybe not I brought my chiuldren up myself from age 0 and they can teeth anytime from 12 weeks to 12 months believe me and you are always told different by midwifes etc but my daughter was walking at 20 months and hads all her teeth so whats up with life just do as you think mrught you are the mother you know instinctively Gooid Luck By the way I am male
Reply:Yes your baby could easily be teething, teething is a process, the teeth have to get pushed up to the gums, and then they have to push through the gums. Not all children are the same, some children are even born with teeth. I remember that first mom feeling. Walgreen's or a pharmacy sell these homeopathic teething tablets, they are amazing and your little one could take them with out you worrying about it affecting him. They are called Hylands homeopathic Teething Tablets. They work really good. No need to call the dr. unless you think it's something more serious. If he stops eating and drinking, or gets a high fever. Things like that. But you can give him these tablets worry free. I used it on both of my children; my 15mo is getting big teeth in so it doesn't get any easier. Hope this passes fast.
Reply:tell ur health visitor to shut the **** up they chat so much ****. get ur baby some anbesol from boots chemist. my health visitor told me not to give my baby water an lots of other crap

they think they know it all

theres also teething biscuits in asda called bickipegs for £1.50
Reply:yes it can happen anytime 2 of mine were born with teeth

just keep give calpol every 3 hourly %26amp; something like a teethin ring for him to chew on you can get 1's that go in the fridge they are very soothing for them
Reply:of course your baby is teething . anyway try an homeopathic remedy as carpol is really no good.contact ainsworth homeopathic pharmacy in london, they give great advise over the phone and ask them for the soft tablet when taking remedies. they will post them to you. homeopathic medicine is great for babies because it works. your baby is a bit young for bicky-pegs or rings so try rubbing his gum gently with your little finger just untill you get the remedy .
Reply:Believe it or not but babies have been known to be born with teeth. I know being a 1st time mum can be really scary and in my experience most health visitors go by a book there is only one hv i know that actually as children. When it comes to your kids if something doesn't feel right then i suggest always go to your doctors even if its just to ease your mind. They wont call you for it you wont be the 1st to go when it might be nothing and you will probably find they are really sympathetic that's what they are there for to make you better and ease your mind. try a teething ring place it in the freezer and let your baby chew or suck on it the cooling will help numb their gums and ease the pain
Reply:If you in the Uk try parsons teething powders. Homeopathic plant remedy, worked a treat for my youngest who seemed to have desperate trouble getting her teeth through.

Poor little mite.
Reply:for your health vistior to say he cant be teething is so wrong. my son started at 3 months and had 2 teeth befoer he turned 4 months. also my brother was born with a tooth. it is odd that this happens but it does.
Reply:My First kid got two teeth at 4 mos. then from there she didn't get any till well after her first birthday! So every kid can be different! It really helps if you can get her teething tablet!!! you can find them at any store. And the best thing of all they are all natural and instant relief! I also use Tylenol at night to help her sleep!
Reply:I think your health visitor should check her stuff! babies can be born with teeth! so yes your son is more than likely teething! if it will put ur mind at rest take him to the doctors.

I looked after a baby that was born with about 4 teeth not so long ago thing was her mum was trying to breastfeed! ouch!

dont worry he will be fine!
Reply:My son got his first two teeth in at 3 months. So I'd say it is possible for him to he teething.
Reply:My son did the same thing starting at 3 months. It would last a couple days then stop. And that continued off and on since then. He is 7 months old now and is finally cutting a tooth, the top left canine. It was hard to see him be so uncomfortable but as he got older he got used to it and didnt get so distressed. You can try putting your finger on ice for a minute then massaging his gums, my son enjoyed this.
Reply:What are the symptoms of teething?

While some children seem to sprout their first teeth with no problems at all, for others it is a painful and drawn out process. Red and swollen gums, heavy drooling, sleepless nights, inconsistent feeding, biting and general crankiness can all be signs that your baby's first tooth is on its way and for these babies, and their parents, teething is no fun. Some parents report that their baby develops a temperature or diarrhoea immediately prior to a tooth breaking through but most experts do not believe that teething causes these conditions, so treat them separately and always consult a doctor if necessary. You may, however, find that your baby gets a red rash on her chin and lower lip from all the dribbling. Gently wipe the dribble off with a soft cotton cloth, making sure that you don't rub. Smoothing a barrier cream such as petroleum jelly on her chin at bedtime and before she goes out will help to protect her skin from further irritation.

Why does teething hurt?

Your baby's teeth started developing in the womb, when teeth buds were formed in her gums. As her teeth develop, they push up through her gums, a process which can cause irritation, pain and swelling. (You may remember the ache your wisdom teeth created when they arrived, which will give you an idea of what your toddler is going through). While pressure seems to relieve the pain (see below) sucking causes more blood to rush to the swollen areas, making them particularly sensitive. This is why some babies may temporarily reject the breast or bottle when they are teething.

What are the best ways to soothe painful gums?

Some parents find that simply rubbing a finger over sore gums can numb the pain temporarily. Giving your baby something to bite on will have a similar effect, relieving the pressure and thereby easing the pain. The chances are that your baby will find things to chew on herself but she might find hard, unsweetened rusks, teething rings or a peeled raw carrot helpful, (though don't use carrots once she has her first tooth, as she may bite off lumps that she can then choke on). Anything cold will be particularly soothing so keep rubber teethers in the fridge or give your baby a partly-frozen wet flannel to gnaw on. Chilled water in a bottle or, if she prefers, a feeding cup may help to calm her gums and if she is old enough for solid foods, offer her cold apple puree or plain yoghurt. There will be times, however, when your baby will reject all of these offerings and, at these moments, a cuddle is the best therapy you can supply.

Should I use teething gels or homeopathic remedies?

A little teething gel rubbed onto the sore gum with a clean finger has a numbing effect that lasts for about 20 minutes. However, you should not use teething gels more than six times a day and, if you are breast-feeding, you should avoid using them immediately before a feed as they can numb your baby's tongue making it hard for her to suck successfully. They might also numb your areola (the dark skin around your nipple) making feeding difficult for both of you. Many mothers swear by homeopathic granules (available from chemists). These come in small sachets that you pour into baby's mouth. Check that the brand you are buying is sugar-free. Sugar is a prime cause of tooth decay so you don't want to be filling your baby's mouth with it at regular intervals, particularly if this is not her first tooth.

Can I give my baby infant paracetamol?

Babies under three months old should not be given infant paracetamol without first talking to your doctor. Fortunately, most babies have reached this age before they get the first symptoms of teething so if all else fails, and your baby is in real distress, the correct dose can be given. However, you should first make sure that there isn't something else causing your baby to be upset. Ear infections are often mistaken for teething and will need medical attention. Also, if he has a temperature, or is inconsolable, you should certainly consult your doctor.

How long will teething last?

Just as there is no set date at which your baby's first tooth will arrive, so the time it takes to make its journey through that little gum is different for every child. Some will be troubled for just a few days before a tooth emerges, while other babies will display all the symptoms of teething for months with nothing to show for it at all. The good news is that, for most babies, the first few teeth are the worst. Problems associated with teething tend to subside, certainly until the molars, the large teeth at the back of the mouth, start to come through and that is unlikely to happen until after your baby's first birthday, giving you and your baby time to recover from this difficult and, for some, stressful stage.
Reply:i think ya son is teething.. my boys are 9yr and 5yr old and they both started teething at a young age!! both off them was 10 weeks old.
Reply:Hi My little girl was the same and at 13 weeks, capol and bongella worked wonders and a bit of TLC ! ! ! Try tesco and you can get a dummy which is gum shaped you freeze ! I popped bongella on it as well.
Reply:One of my Sons was teething that young....he had 4 teeth by the time he was 5 months old.......

Some babies are born with one or more teeth (called natal teeth) or may have teeth emerge within the first 30 days of life (called neonatal teeth).
Reply:go top docs as soon as poss and voice your concerns,in the mean time yes use teething gel and see what happens. It is poss that your baby could be teething as al babys are different. Did you know that it has been known for babys to be born with teethe apparently.

I never heard of the diagnosis that your health visitor gave you. Sounds really strange and im going to ask my health visitor if thats a true diagnosis.Anyway your his mum and you know best so listen to your own instincts.

(use teething rings.)
Reply:I cannot beleive a health visitor would say its just his mouth getting ready for solids?? WTF does that mean? Honestly, some of them are usless.

Its does sound like teething and it isn't to early. Some babies are born with teeth already through!! Calpol and teething gel are a good start. Parsons Teething powders are amazing things - ask your pharmacist for them.

Don't fret to much, its tough seeing them like that but all you can do is reassure them with cuddles.
Reply:many babies are born with teeth. i agree with you this does sound like a teething baby. in boots you can buy ashton%26amp;parsons. box small herbal powders that our grannies used. i used them for my teething kids and now for my grankids and they great. works for all sorts of baby upsets. bout £2.50 box of 20. highly recommend them. good luck
Reply:My little boy was just like this he has just turned 1 and has ALL his teeth (yes he does look a bit freaky!!!) But beware ear infections can sometimes have the same symptons as teething and you do need to see GP for that so I would suggest going there anyway. Better safe than sorry
