Teething or a cold?

Ive had a cold since Saturday and my almost 8 month old seems to be picking it up-however I'm pretty sure he is teething too. I am still breastfeeding and yesterday that's all he wanted to do. He hardly ate anything but his appetite seems to be a bit better today. He's still got a runny nose but doesn't sound stuffed up really. He also keeps hitting his mouth a little bit with his fist and rubbing it while he does that. Do you think he has cold, teething or both? What can I do to help him. He doesn't like teething rings or a wash cloth

Thanks

Teething or a cold?
Both. Teething weakens a baby's immune system, which is probably why he picked up your cold, despite your antibodies. I'm betting that you're not exclusively breastfeeding anymore, and that he's getting a good amount of baby food. So he's not quite getting the same benefit of breastmilk as he did as a newborn.

You can squirt some saline nasal drops up his nose and use an aspirator to suck them out twice a day. Ask your doctor about infant tylenol alternating with infant motrin for teething pain if it's necessary.
Reply:I think he's got both. Usually when they teeth they get this way. It's normal, but I know it's a heart ache when they feel pain in any way. We seem to feel it also in a different way. We want to take their suffering from them and deal with it ourselves. Maybe try putting your finger on ice for a while them rubbing his gums with it.
Reply:Sounds like a little bit of both. To help with the teething since he doesn't like either of them try a frozen waffle. My son likes to chew on my shoulder when he is teething hard, but I'm not to sure you want to try that.
Reply:Motrin works best if he's in pain. It lasts twice as long as Tylenol and seems to work better.
Reply:Could be both. I know when my daughter is teething she always has had a runny nose, fever, and loose stools. But she never acts sick like her nose is never stuffed it is just running and the snot is always clear. My daughter likes frozen waffles, frozen wash clothes, and I have tried this and it seems to work, before she has her bottle I will put her nipple in the freezer and then put it on bottle and that helps her eat and seems to help. I used baby orajel and baby teething tablets there all natural and dissolve under the toungue and they work great.
