My daughter is teething and unfortunately she is only 14wks old... so she can't hold anything herself so I have to do things for her. All the teething toys are too big for her mouth even if I can hold them there for her. I let her chew my finger, or on a newborn "soothie", a gum brush we got in a first aid kit, and a finger gum brush that's softer than the other on (but it's still big in her mouth becuase she is young and just because she is a baby with a small mouth). So are there any other ideas? Maybe non-conventional ideas?
I also freeze the corners of a washcloth and let her gnaw on those, but my question is: Did your baby just kind of suck the water out??? I'm sure the cold feels good, but I think she thinks the water is a treat or food too...??? And she seems to need them all the time. Can the tooth be coming soon? She's been showing signs of teething for 3-4 wks. Is this too much water for her? There really isn't much on there but I guess it might add up..........
Teething questions? Frozen cloths for teething?
We had the same problem with our daughter. She started teething around 3 months old. Two teeth popped out when she was 4.5 months old. Most of the teething toys we found were way too big for her mouth and she wanted us to hold them for her the whole time! The frozen face cloth corners got us through it all! I don't think she got too much water, she is breast fed too and she still gained weight during that time period. She is now 9 months and getting her 5th and 6th tooth in and we still use the frozen face cloths for her, she seems to like them the best!
Reply:When I was younger, my parents gave me a big pickle to suck on. They are quite healthy, but make sure she has water with it. Teething too much can make them chew on things to much in the future. My brother is 10 and chews on paper, his fingers, wires, necklaces, and anything he can get, he even sucks on the remote. I don't think it is too much water. I think she is building a habit before she can even talk. You should give her something big, foodwise.
Reply:Hmmmm interesting first answerer! It was my first laugh of the day.
Regarding the teething, its fine to let her suck on the cloth if it helps to soothe her. My two babies didn't teeth that early, so I really do sympathize because its a young age. Do what you can to soothe her gums. Have you tried using teething tablets or little teethers gel? This helps a great deal when the teething starts getting really bad (usually when she just fusses and fusses). As for the pickle, its a great idea but the salt content could be dangerous and just isnt a good idea.
I am not sure if you have seen one but at WalMart and Target they have these teething toys that vibrate when they bite down on it with their gums. Supposedly its supposed to massage them but I never tried it. Have you tried pedialite popsicles? Those are good and also encourage hydration. It may help numb it a bit and calm her down.
I really wouldn't worry about the water part too much that is ok. But I would definitely start using teething tablet once a day if she is demanding for her gums to be rubbed continuously. Usually you can feel a bump or swollen spot where her teeth are trying to come in. Use a small flashlight and look in there to see or check her under a brightly lit lamp.
I have heard of babies that had crowded teeth that were causing a great deal of pain or develop infections, so just keep an eye on the gums and be sure that they don't look red or overly swollen. In that case a doctor should check it out.
