Teething and Fever?

How high can a fever get for a teething baby?





My 12 month old son had been running about 99.7-101 F for the past 2 days. Unless I give him Tylenol it stays high and as soon as it wears off it goes right back up. I'm taking him to the Dr. in the morning. He's never ran fever like this for teething and I'm afraid it's something more. I was just wondering if teething will make it go that high.

I love to know that other mothers are just as protective as I am.After three girls and 19 weeks preg now,I still worry like that.That lets me know youre an awesome mom,always wanting the best for your baby.As to your question,It really probably is the teething.Teething can cause so many strange behaviors and effects.Yes, a temp can get really high.My daughter {first one} has ran a temp of 101. due to teething.When it gets to 102 and over,then its time to call the Dr. As long as he is eating good and playing,and shows no sign of ......pulling on his ears,constant crying ,not being able to be comforted no matter what you do,and what I call, "chronic crying" schrills that are not familiar or like the babys personality, I really wouldnt worry too much..Feel his gums and run your finger up and down to feel all around the gums.Sometimes teeth doesnt immediately come in the straight out position. If tylenol is treating it well, and he seems fine {same behavior as always} then hes ok, the older they get around this age,the harder and more frustrating it is when they are hurting,especially when their teeth are coming in.I will say a little prayer for him tonight.poor baby,they just cant handle things like we can ya know? Just give him alot of comfort and some good old fashioned TLC.Im sure hes just fine.

Reply:yes my daughter gets a high fever of right over 102 alot when she teethes i can assure you it's perfectly normal.. but if you're like me and cautious, you'll probably still go to the doctor regardless what anyone says
Reply:The doctors always told me that teething does not cause fevers. I would think for that long and that high, that maybe he has an infection of some sort - maybe his ears? Glad you are taking him to the doctor, and good luck to you both!

Reply:Our Ped said they only thing babies get from teething is teeth.


No fevers, diarrhea etc. Good luck with your appointment.

Reply:I do not remember as far as teething (my youngest is now 11). Just make sure you take care of that fever! I do no that fevers are not good for little guys.

Reply:As long as everything is fine with him he should be ok. Doctors in the past have said a fever that won't go down with tylenol is a problem or if it lasts for more than three days.
Reply:still keep the appointment, cause better safe then sorry, but my kids did the same thing and it was normal. Let him also chew on a wet wash cloth. Put a wet wash cloth in the freezer for a while and let him chew on it. That will cool him down some and help his gums. Good luck!
Reply:In dentistry, we refer to a few studies that were done on teething and illness. According to the results, there is no correlation between teething and illnesses. In the studies, blood samples were taken from children at various ages. The researchers looked to see if there were any markers in the blood tests that would correlate with concurrent teething. So far, there have been no studies I'm aware of that show any correlation of teething and illness. Think of this...if there were a correlation, wouldn't teenagers get sick or a fever when their wisdom teeth are erupting? It is the same process as the baby (deciduous) teeth erupting.

Reply:SOmetimes it's normal for a baby that age to have a low grade fever from teething. But I think taking him to the doctor is a good idea. He could als have a mild ear infection or evena mild cold and not really show any symptoms. Does he seem to want to scratchat his ears or look like he wants to put his finger in his ears? Tha's a common sign of an ear infection. Its caused by the eustachian tubes that drain through the sinuses being small at his age. Tha's common in many kids.


Best to see a doctor. In the meantime, keep him cool. DOn't wrap him in blankets or anything to warm him up.
Reply:Yes! I have two kids and the both got fevers teething, but also both of my older children the last week have had similar symptoms it only lasted two days and all they had was a fever also so it may be just a small little cold going on right now. I'm sure he's fine. Good Luck.
Reply:my doctor said a virus can cause a fever that lasts three days.. I just went through this.. not fun. I even caught it.. dont worry .. just push the fluids and go to the doc in the morning.. you are doing everything you can.

Reply:Yes, your son is different from my little girl, but when she started teething she staying with a high fever. The best thing is to rub whiskey on his gums. Don't use teething ointment, that just makes the gums harder for the tooth (teeth) to break through and not only that but harder on your baby. If she is whiny just wash your hands and rub his gums. It will soothe him and make him calm down.
Reply:I've heard that teething never really causes a fever but my daughter had a low grade one for a little while when she first cut her teeth. If it's that high and last for a few days, it's probably a good idea to go to the doctor. Better safe than sorry when little ones are concerned
Reply:I just went through this w/ my almost 10 mo. old son. He ran a fever of 102.5 while he was teething. I made the mistake of stopping the tylenol as soon as the fever dropped...give it to him every 4 hrs and keep up with it for a full day even after his fever is normal...you can also alternate between baby Motrin and tylenol. Our pediatrician told us as long as the appetite and disposition is normal, everything is FINE...if the fever persists for more than 3 days or is accompanied by any other symptoms, there's cause for concern. I've heard so many different things about whether teething can cause a fever...if all else seems fine, I would think it is due to teething.Hang in there and good luck!
Reply:Yes, it is quite normal for a baby to run a fever that high when teething, just keep the tylenol or ibuprofen handy.

Reply:actually a fever below 102 is a good one, it helps to fight off infection. but the fact that he has had it for a few days is not good. it could be teething, but ive found that when my daughter teethes she gets ear infections because she gets congested when she teeths which causes an ear infection. that may be what is going on with your baby. ive been told that as long as they are acting fine and not miserable to avoid giving them tylenol and let the fever do its work. but if your son gets miserable when the fever spikes keep him on tylenol. good luck at the doctors.
Reply:My son got the flue,teething and a 102 temp and the doc sent me home with Tylanol.He was fine two days later.
Reply:He could have "hand, foot and mouth disease" which is very common %26amp; contagious with little people, not life threatening or life lasting and he could have gotten it at a daycare or from another child who has it. It also could be an ear infection. So yes take the baby in to the doctor and ease your mind. Now if it turns out to be that he is only teething, get Hylands teething tablets for him, they work great, no nasty stinging taste like oragel. Good luck!!!
Reply:Yes, high fever is normal when teething. Besides giving him Tylenol, you need to keep him warm. When my son first began teething I rang and old friend of mine (75 yrs) and she instructed me to rub a little vicks on the mould of his head, on his chest, palm of his hands and the sole of his feet and it really worked, after that he was alot more calm and began doing his usual stuff. Please take him to a doctor though.
