Teething question??? Unique suggestions please!!??

My son is six months old and starting to teethe. He hates to chew on frozen wash cloths, not interested in the teether ring, generally cries when I let him chew on my finger because now it hurts. I can’t see teeth coming in but he ran a fever of 100 degrees over the weekend, chews on everything in sight, drools, chews on his fingers and cries. Before this weekend he rarely got upset and would smile after 30 seconds of crying, now he’s crying all day and night, neither of us has slept a wink. I gave him Tylenol and Motrin (different days) and both worked but I can’t realistically give him medication every 6 hours until he’s done teething. I feel so bad for him and want to help but I can’t figure out how to help him understand that chewing on frozen things helps. I have the mesh teether you put frozen fruit in but he just throws it on the floor, and yes I have tried to show him many times how to hold and chew on various teething apparatuses. A woman at work today told me to put sugar in a pillow case (corner of the pillow case) and dip in water, so he will chew on it. Sounds reasonable. Any other unique suggestions? I’m exhausted, having a sleep deprived migraine and hate seeing my dear son in pain.

My little darling is also teething right now and i feel the same way about baby Tylenol! I happened in to our local organic market and there i found it! Its an all natural organic homoeopathic medicine good for children from 1month to 30 months. It's called Camilia and is made by Boiron its 30 individual doses so it super handy for travelling and it is a clear odourless tasteless liquid that is sugar and alcohol free! It contains Belladonna, Chamomilla,Ferrum Phosphoricum and purified water! It really helps my little guy withing 15 minutes he is usually asleep as the pain is relieved! He just cut his first tooth and its not doing the up and down thing but his gums were a little tender i found he LOVED to gnarl on cool tough skinned pickles(in a mesh teething bag) I think the brine in them helped the itch!
Reply:try teething tablets by hylands, my nephew was very very cranky during teething and besides tylenol it was the only thing that worked. you can find them at local grocery stores now, in the baby aisle. its made of natural herbs and stuff so you can give it to your baby more than tylenol.
Reply:My son didn't want anything wet or cold either! All the normal things to chew on, he just hated. We used the Orajel q-tips to rub his gums every now and then.... works quickly but doesn't last long... pair that up with the tylenol and/or motrin. We had to give our son the meds for 4-5 days at a time to get past the "worst."

He always liked to chew on things he shouldn't be chewing on... the straps of my purse, his books, etc. The best thing that worked for us was something that was "gummy" textured, but not wet or cold... try the teething rings warm. Or he loved chewing on the top of the Tylenol bottle... (obviously under extremly watchful eyes...) But try and find things like that...

Good luck!
Reply:With both of my children (4 years and 16 months) I used Baby Orajel if they seemed to be really irritated. I'd give them some Tylenol, then rub Baby Orajel on their gums and that seemed to provide a little relief.

Hope this helps. As a mom, I totally understand your pain. :-)
Reply:If your child is running a fever and crying a lot, it's possible that there is something else going on besides teething. But once that is ruled out...

sometimes I'd put ice and water in a bottle and let him chew on it. They do have baby orajel that helps numb the gums, but that doesn't seem to last long. Other than I would just snuggle and comfort him or let him relax in his swing with some toys he could chew if he wanted to.
Reply:It seems a little obvious, but have you tried the baby forms of ambesol or numzit or similar products?

I don't know what is safe for babies in terms of drugs, but does anyone know if it would be ok to rub a few grains of BC Powder on his gums?

I'm afraid of the sugar idea cause it just sounds like it's going to get him all hopped up and probably even more upset cause of all the energy it'll give him.

Also, he may not dig the frozen washcloths, but have you tried just putting a damp one in the refrigerator (not freezer) and tried that? It may be that the frozen stuff is just too shockingly cold. Or maybe put it in the freezer but only for a few minutes.

does he have a favorite toy that he kinda gnaws on? Nothing is sacred here, Teddy's little paw or ear can get wet and go in the freezer too! If it gets you a little sleep, right?

it's funny but what if you made a small hole in one of the packages of those frozen pedialyte pops and let him suck on it? The flavor might keep him going and the hole can be small enough he's not getting a ton... or make small ice cubes out of juice and wrap those in a washcloth - so he's sucking the flavor and the cold through?

I think I've run out of ideas...Good luck!
Reply:my kids liked to chew on a pacifire. my daughter never took one and when she started teething thats all she wanted and she didn't suck on it she chewed on it and we always knew what tooth was coming in because where the tooth was, is where she would chew on the pacifire. and orajel works good to but only for a short time. or even try a bottle, just put a little bit of water or juice in it and let him chew on the nipple, thats what they tend to do if they aren't hungry. good luck i have been through it 3 times and understand.
Reply:I've found that brushing my guys gums with his little toothbrush helps, it stimulates his body to release natural pain killers and helps to numb the pain for a bit. Plus he loves the taste of his toothpaste (non - fluoride apple and banana flavor). My husband says frozen ego waffles (which I won't allow as my guy is only 4 months old and isn't eating true solids yet). My friend used to make formula slushies - grind up ice and then mix the formula powder in and put it in a regular bottle. It won't start coming out until it really melts but the nipple will stay nice and cold for him to chew on and you know he is not filling up on sugar or water.
